
Haddonfield Acts to Create Hadrosaurus foulkii,
Haddonfield, New Jersey
“Community Fundraising
for Public Art”
Challenge:
Privately raise nearly $200,000 within 15 months to finance a
life-size bronze sculpture of Hadrosaurus foulkii, whose skeleton
was the first dinosaur discovered in the world in South Jersey,
along with related site improvements.
Strategy: Developed
fundraising plan, tools and sponsorship benefits. Created Finance
Committee and provided turnkey fundraising packages to solicit
contributions from local individuals, civic organizations, corporations
and foundations. Supported program through aggressive media relations
outreach.
Results: Met
goals, generating widespread publicity in major print and broadcast
media, including the Philadelphia Inquirer and the New York Times,
and every regional television news program. Brokered arrangement
with New York Times writer for children’s book to benefit
project. Sculpture dedicated to unanimously positive public and
media reviews.
